Reflections...
By Joanne Eglash
What motivated me to come up with the concept for TriActiveKids.com? I reflected on my experiences with exercise as a child. I was miserable attempting to succeed in gym classes, trying to keep pace with the stars of the physical education department, the children who ran the fastest, jumped the highest, and always won the gym teacher's praise. I remember receiving criticism from my peers ("Hurry up – you're going to make our team lose!") and negative feedback from teachers ("Can’t you run any faster?").
And I thought about the epidemic of childhood obesity that our nation now faces, as old-fashioned physical education classes are categorized as "unnecessary" and mandatory gym is viewed as "outdated." After a long day sitting in a classroom, our nation's children troop home (often arriving via bus or carpool) and, armed with a hefty bag of chips or cookies and a soda, retreat to their rooms to play computer games or watch TV.
"All it takes is one sparkplug, one catalyst, to make a difference," James Sargen, the CEO TriActive America, has taught me. I reflected on his words. What could I do to become a catalyst, a sparkplug, in the battle against childhood obesity? And thus came my concept for TriActive Kids. Transforming my initial vision into reality was not a one-woman show: every individual whom you see listed on the Team page was a critical part of that process. And throughout your experience with TriActive Kids, from your initial visit to our site through your selection of our products to the shipping and follow-up, you will have the pleasure of interacting with many members of the TriActiveKids team.
Most of all, however, the TriActive Kids Web site is about YOU, whether you are a parent, a teacher, a coach, a leader, a school administrator, a relative, a friend, or a concerned individual who wants to take part in our nation’s quest for improved health and fitness for all ages. I look forward to your thoughts and feedback.
