Childhood obesity has become a national epidemic. Pediatricians across the nation report that children as young as six now frequently suffer from formerly adult ailments such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
The solution may seem simple: ensure that children exercise daily and eat healthy food rather than fast food or junk food. As more school districts are forced to cut down on or eliminate physical education classes, however, making certain that children are involved in a fitness program becomes more difficult. Increasingly, children from kindergarten through high school face a day filled with sitting in classes. Breaks and lunchtime are reserved for eating snacks such as candy bars and lunches such as pizza, hamburgers, and fries. After school, they go home to sit in front of the computer or television, snacking on more junk food.
